Autumn: The Season of Preparing for Winter Nesting
Autumn has begun, and although most of the trees around me are still lush in their green shades, a few have started their colorful journey, descending to the ground to become nourishment for the next generation of foliage in spring. Typically, I look forward to this transition, but this year feels different. I find myself wishing for a longer summer. However, what I want does not align with reality, so I adjust my attitude and embrace the season for what it is.
To set the mood, I start with pumpkin-flavored coffee. I sprinkle pumpkin spice seasoning directly into my coffee grounds, knowing that pumpkin is one of fall’s most iconic flavors. I also decorate my living space with miniature pumpkins on the mantle. As the evenings grow longer and darker, the subtle warmth of these decorations creates a cozy, inviting vibe in my living room. Though I’m not one to embrace fall-scented candles, I still love the glow they bring. I stick to my favorite scent—fresh citrus—which sparks joy every time I inhale it, even if it feels more like summer than fall.
In preparation for winter, I’ve made some changes around the house. I’ve swapped out my light, airy bedding for something cozier, setting aside the white linens until next year. Stocking my pantry with staple items is a must, as my routine shifts with the season. No more bi-weekly walks to Whole Foods, a mile up the road. Instead, my steps will be taken on the treadmill until the warmer days of summer return. But for now, I’m still enjoying the cool, crisp morning walks, which I’ll continue until the temperature consistently drops below fifty-five degrees. My body doesn’t respond well to the cold these days, so I pamper it, keeping warm to avoid stiffness and achy joints.
As the season changes, so does my entertainment. With fun shifting indoors, I’ve treated myself to an external DVD/CD drive, allowing me to rediscover my movie collection without the need for costly streaming services or commercials that clash with my values. I’ve also checked the quality of my art supplies, making sure my paints are ready for those days when inspiration strikes. Drawing and painting will once again fill the quiet moments as I spend more time indoors.
Entertaining is another part of the season’s shift, and I’m already preparing. I’ve created easy brunch menus for gatherings with friends. Instead of going out to dine and paying tax and tip, we’ll enjoy delicious meals at my place, where the atmosphere is warm and familiar. And of course, I haven’t forgotten my books. I have a stack ready for weekend snuggles on the sofa, perfect for transporting me to other worlds as the wind howls outside.
Though there are still a few things left to do, like buying a new winter coat, socks, and warm dress boots, I’ve already stocked up on plenty of tights to see me through the colder months. While I’m not thrilled about the shorter daylight hours and cooler temperatures, I know I can’t fight it. Like everything else in life, it’s a mindset. We can either resist and fall into the winter blues, or we can embrace the change, lean into the journey, and make the most of it.
By shifting my perspective, I find myself looking forward to what the season brings—warm interiors, good company, creative projects, and plenty of cozy moments. Before we know it, the trees will bud once again, and the flowers will pepper the ground with their colorful blooms. But for now, I’ll soak up the beauty of autumn and prepare for the season of nesting.
